Dublin can reach its potential
admin March 8th, 2009
I believe that Dublin’s North Inner City has the potential to be a model European city and I am working to make this happen. Below is the text of a speech I gave at the Green Party Convention on the 6th of March.
“Dublin’s North Inner City has the potential to be a model European urban environment. It is rich with architectural heritage, culture, and natural ameneties.
But the opporutnity of the Celtic Tiger years was squandered as soulless apartment blocks and tax breaks for banks were the measure of success.
In the constituency at the very heart of the Celtic Tiger, inequality and urban decay persist.
How can this be explained?
By a philosophy that sees an economy instead of a country, that sees individuals instead of a society, that believes in greed rather than green and trickle down instead of bottom up.
The North Inner City will never reach its potential while its people are left behind.
But it can reach its potential. It can have:
· Trees, green spaces and family friendly accomodation,
· Streets that are safe and free from drugs and crime,
· Local shops and markets on clean streets with clean air, and
· Public transort that works.
This is the Green approach to success. The old model is broken – its time for change.”
