European Parliament Elections 2009

David Geary and Deirdre de Burca Euro Elections 2009

In September 2008 I was selected as a replacement for Senator Deirdre de Búrca in the forthcoming European Parliament Elections which will be held in June 2009.

My experience in Europe includes working on Asylum and Migration issues in the European Commission and working for a number of years in the Brussels office of an international law firm on EU law issues including workers rights, environmental issues and competition law.   My experience includes participating in meetings and working with officials in the Council of the EU, the European Parliament and the European Commission. I am currently Chairman of the EU & International Affairs Committee of the Law Society of Ireland.

As a student I studied Law and European Studies at the Univesity of Limerick and I hold a masters degree in European Law from the European University Institute, Florence.  In 1999 I was the first person to report on legal action the EU could take to stop the trafficking of women into the EU.  This report may be found at: http://www.eui.eu/LIB/Catalogue/

The Lisbon Treaty

During 2008 I campaigned in favour of the Lisbon Treaty which I believe is good for Ireland and greatly improves the EU by introducing further democratic reforms.

I organised a number of public information events on the Lisbon Treaty and I debated against opponents of the Treaty both at local events and in the national media.  I was also a legal spokesman for the Irish Alliance for Europe.

A copy of the information I circulated on the Lisbon Treaty in the North Inner City in May 2008 may be seen here. lisbon-treaty-nic.pdf
