Public Transport for Dublin City

At the Green Party Convention in Wexford (6th-8th March) I put forward a motion that called for the reform and improvement of Dublin Bus so that Dublin Bus meets the needs of Dubliners. This motion was adopted and I am now working with Green TDs, Senators and Ministers to turn this vision into reality.  The motion was:

That Dublin Bus must modernise to play a pivotal role in an integragted public transportation system in Dublin.  In order to achieve this there must be urgent reform of both management structures and work practices, a radical over haul of fares, routes, time tabling, ticketing and information.  Dublin Bus must focus on the needs of the customer in a 21st century city.  Full implementation of the Deloitte report should only be a starting point of this reform.”

In April 2008 I called on the Government to improve public transport for Dublin.  In particular I am working to:

  • improve bus services through cheaper fares, simpler routes, integrated tickets and accurate bus timetables;
  • improve cycle lanes and cycling facilities;
  • improve train services - in particular by reducing journey times and fares;
  • make our streets more people friendly by reducing the amount of traffic coming into the city.

Trees for Stoneybatter?

In February we held a public meeting on planting trees in the Stoneybatter area.  The idea is to add a bit of greenery to the area which would have positive effects on air quality and quality of life in Stoneybatter. We are working on a proposal that would allow a small number of trees to be planted on local streets.  Under the proposal this can be done without affecting car parking or light on streets.  However the positive impact on the Stoneybatter area would be very significant.  For further information please contact me.

Racist rumors in the North Inner City

Many North Inner City residents told me that they were concerned about a rumor that is circulating in the city about taxis driven by non-nationals.  The rumor made people feel unsafe.  I checked with the Taxi Regulator and with the Gardaí and I am pleased to report that the rumor is not true.

However, it appears that the rumor has a racist motive.   Racism and racist attitudes have no place in Irish society.  It is important that each of us challenges racist attitudes and behavior when we come across them.  Irish people were subject to prejudice in other countries for long enough and we must build an inclusive and fair society.
